Christmas Time is Here – Gluten Free Gingerbread

Kim from Cook IT Allergy Free put out the word a few weeks ago that she was going to host a Gluten Free Gingerbread House contest. The prize for the winner is an iPod Touch…I was in!

I decided to think outside the box a bit on this one, and decided to go with a gingerbread theme instead. I decided to re-create A Charlie Brown Christmas. Charlie Brown is classic. The Christmas special is something that everyone, both the young and the young at heart look forward to every holiday season.

Here are all the kids (and Snoopy) on stage, getting ready for their Christmas play.

All of the characters are made using a royal icing transfer (my first attempt at this method), which is then adhered to gluten-free gingerbread cookies. Everything on the stage (curtains included) is edible.

Here are our leading characters…Charlie Brown and Snoopy. I love Snoopy. :)

Schroeder is hammering away on the piano, while Lucy admires him. Oh, Lucy.
Lucy Van Pelt: Say, by the way, can you play “Jingle Bells?”
[Schroeder proceeds to play “Jingle Bells”, which sounds like a traditional grand piano]
Lucy Van Pelt: [interrupting] No, no. I mean “Jingle Bells.” You know, deck them halls and all that stuff?
[Schroeder begins to play again, with the piano sounding like an organ]
Lucy Van Pelt: [interrupting again] No, no. You don’t get it at all. I mean “Jingle Bells.” You know, Santa Claus and ho-ho-ho, and mistletoe and presents to pretty girls.
[gazes lovingly at Schroeder, who then out of frustration taps one key of the piano while playing “Jingle Bells,” which sounds like a child’s toy piano]
Lucy Van Pelt: That’s it!

Linus and his blanket. Even with the blanket, Sally (Charlie’s little sister) still admires him.

Lucy Van Pelt: You think you’re so smart with that blanket. What are you going to do with it when you grow up?
Linus Van Pelt: Maybe I’ll make it into a sport coat.

Ah yes, Peppermint Patty. Running in with the script, to show to Marcie.

And of course, Snoopy’s dog house, all decorated for Christmas (using M&M’s and royal icing).

I’m sure we’ve all seen A Charlie Brown Christmas once or twice (a year), so what’s your favorite scene/character?

Kim had given a few recipes for gluten-free gingerbread, and I used the recipe from Clever only Sometimes(click on the link to go directly to the recipe). It is a fantastic tasting gingerbread, it is both gluten free and casein free. It rolled out and baked BEAUTIFULLY. I really enjoyed munching on the “scraps”. And, it is holding up great for the gingerbread creations too. Delicious!

Charlie Brown: Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?
Linus Van Pelt: Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.
[
moves toward the center of the stage]
Linus Van Pelt: Lights, please.
[
a spotlight shines on Linus]
Linus Van Pelt: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'”
[
Linus picks up his blanket and walks back towards Charlie Brown]
Linus Van Pelt: That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
